HIV / AIDS and Children
As one of the core objectives of Joy for Children Uganda, we have been carrying out HIV/AIDS sensitization workshops in schools. We recently visited three schools namely; Kasubi Secondary School, Kampala High School and Bright Way Hill School Bukesa.
|
During the presentation, students watch a film titled “Choose Freedom”. This film is part of a complete life skills programme CHOOSE FREEDOM featuring two high school students Tendai and Jabu. It high lights the general life and pressures of being in high school which include getting involved in pre-marital sex, attending a leaver’s dance, defying rules set by parents and the results associated with these choices which include low self-esteem, unwanted pregnancies, resentment and poor performance in class.
After the movie, our senior counselor at Joy for Children Mr. Joseph Muhumuza talks to the students about HIV, how it is transmitted and how to avoid getting infected with HIV.
Students are then given a chance to ask questions

regarding HIV/AIDS. They write their questions on a small piece of paper, they are all collected together and the counselor reads out questions one a time and responds to it.

 |
Some of the questions that were asked by students and the answers from Mr. Joseph Muhumuza are
as follows:
- I have a partner, we have been courting for almost two years but he has started asking for sex. What can I do? I also love him!
Any form of sex whether oral, or virginal before marriage is a sin called fornication. It is important to remember that true love waits, sex is never equal to love and vise versa. If your partner truly loves you then he ought to wait until the right time comes, that is the best way to measure his love for you.
|
- If someone does not have HIV and plays sex with someone who has it with a condom, can he get it?
If used properly, chances are minimal that that person will catch HIV, however I cant guarantee 00% that he cant get HIV. Condoms are purposely made for family planning and birth control, not for preventing HIV.
- If you kiss someone who is infected with HIV will you also get it?
Though HIV is sometimes present in saliva, it apparently exists at very low concentrations. HIV can be in saliva because saliva contains T-cells and macrophages, which roam around the surfaces of the mouth's mucous membrane. The concentration of HIVs in saliva seems to be very low compared to blood and semen. In theory, saliva can transmit HIV infection but, so far, it doesn't seem to have happened in real life.
