SAVING AND MICRO CREDIT
Access to microcredit is one of the fastest ways to enable people put themselves out of poverty. However, access to these micro credits still remains inaccessible to majority poor in Ugandans because of lack of collateral security and breakdown of social capital among the slum dwellers especially women in the slum community. Women cannot start their own business or meet the basic needs of children; the situation has been worsened by increasing rates of inflation in Kampala and Uganda as a whole.
|
Joy for Children, mobilized women in the slums areas in Kampala in December 2010, to save the little income they earn through peeling beans and peas, roasting ground nuts, selling sweets on the street and other odd jobs in the city to make ends meet.
The group that started with 18 women meeting every week to save, learn making handcrafts jewelry from recycled paper and learning basic skills such as baking, hygiene and sanitation, writing and reading, has now expanded to more than 150 meeting weekly to save, discuss issues affecting them, borrow some money from their little saving to start small business and meet basic needs of their especially education and medical and also make jewelry.
