Achievements of JFCU
Among others, we are pleased to share with you some of our achievements since we started our work in children service in 2006:
- Contribution of articles to the media on violence against children entitle “Deal with Child Abuse” published in the New Vision 2007.
- We have been at the forefront of advocating for the rights of young people to education, health, protection and survival through peaceful walks in and around the capital Kampala (June 2008).
- We distributed scholastic materials that included books, pencils, rubbers and balloons to 100 vulnerable children in Tezikuba Family School and African Child Academy both in located slum areas of Kampala.
- Established tailoring centre with 3 sawing machines in Mugusu sub county Kabarole District. The centre targets women, orphans and school drop outs.
- We organized and hosted The Day of Community on Violence against children for western Region held in Fort Portal in partnership with Raising Voices in September 21-22, 2008.
- We have also participated in Radio Talk shows on Children’s Rights and Violence against Children on Voice of Toro (VOT) FM in Fort Portal and Dembe FM in Kampala in September and June respectively.
- Established a pilot school based Child Rights Club in Our Lady of Fatima Secondary Schools in Rubaga Division Kampala district.
- Held numerous child rights promotion visits in schools that include Makerere Highway Secondary School, Victory Academy secondary school, Our Lady of Fatima Primary School, African Child Academy, and Tezikuba Family School in Nakulabye.
- HIV/AIDS care and support program was launched in October 2008 at Kasubi Secondary school. The aim of the program is to give information concerning HIV/AIDS to young people, increasing access to counseling and testing services as well as referral to treatment and nutritional support.
- Carried out research on the freely distributed long Lasting Insecticide Treated Bed nets in Wakiso district in July – August 2008.
- Started up the slum women empowerment project which now has over 150 women working hard to develop themselves through saving, beads making and starting up of small business in order to help them earn a living, the saving scheme where they save and borrow money that helps the women sustain their families and enlarge their businesses.
- The women also make beads as an income generating activity and Joy for children tries to find market for the beads abroad and within Uganda and in this case JFCU has managed to find market in Europe.
- Under our “educating a child programme” we are glad to mention that we have enrolled 25 children in school and they are all receiving their fees and other scholastic materials as required by their schools. However we hope to expand this project given access to funding because we believe that education is the key to success.
- We have been able to promote child participation in Fort Portal town, where we normally hold campaign walks around town, presentations from a number of Primary schools that we work with and the community leaders.
- We have also established a vocational training center in Kyenjojo district for orphans and vulnerable children. This has greatly been funded by Tools with a mission as they are the one who provided us with all the machines.
- Currently we are implementing a “community based response on violence against children project in Kabarole district.” This entails training of counselors from all the eleven parishes that we work with and these include, Kiraro, Bukwali,Nyabukara, Nyansozi, Kitumba0 ,Nyakagongo,Kasusu,Rwengoma,Kiboha,Nyabuswa and Bazaar. Under this project we have also been able to implement community sensitization mostly on market days and church going days because that’s when we are able to acquire a crowd, this is done through drama presentations as it is believed that many people learn from plays and drama than talks and discussion.
- The refresh counselors training was held on the _ day of June 2011. Where counselors shared their experience in dealing with children’s issues in their areas and discussed the way forward on tackling their challenges. This project is still going on ad hopefully we will implement the same in all the districts that we are working with.
