According to UN reports, “2.5 billion People worldwide do not have access to the simplest form of toilet.” Still, many more live in poor sanitation, comprised of poor garbage disposal, poor drainage, and poor use of available latrines.

Joy for Children Uganda advocates for improvement in sanitation by policy-makers, while also practically helping the neediest sections of the population by putting up simple latrines to save the children from preventable diseases like cholera, worms, dysentery and diarrhea.
Joy for Children Uganda is also working with relevant authorities to constract boreholes, springs and provide renovate those in place in an effort to get clean and affordable water to local communities.

Food Security and Nutrition
Uganda is generally rated as having surplus food but there are signs of malnutrition especially among children in most parts of the country. Some key indicators include:- stunting among children under 5 is 39.0%, under weight children under 5 is 23.0%, Vitamin A deficiency among children is 28.0% and Anaemia in children under 5 is 64.0% (National food and Nutrition policy 2000-2003).
This program integrates ctivities and strategies that assist families to improve food and nutrition. The target group comprises of very low-income rural and slum-dwelling pro- active families that have young children. We provide farm inputs such as hoes, pangas, wheelbarrows, improved seeds, and improved breed in addition to giving technical training and advice on transport, markets and planting seasons (capacity building) to local farmers. We also sensitize mothers on better feeding habits for children.

Improving food security promotes better learning of the children, increases resistance to disease associated with malnutrition and surplus produce can be sold to earn an income. This in the end will create a healthy and productive labour, increase income leading to national development.
